more jewelry...

the first of many other wire-wrapped jewelry projects i've been doing. i'll photograph and post the others soon...

i made this on the night of the lunar eclipse back in june. in the center is a moonstone point, topped with an opalized glass bead. you can't see it in the photo, but i hammered my own chain design for it as well.

First Vector!

i've been wanting to do a vector portrait for a while, but i never really had the time for it before now. i first tried to do it in illustrator, but it kept making my computer crash so instead i used photoshop. it took a while, but i'm pretty happy with how it turned out. i think that the finished product had over 60 layers between three groups... my hand hurts. it's a really good way to study how light hits the contours of a face. i'll probably be messing around with more vectors in the future.

I've begun a new painting that I'm working on outside of the studio. It's not finished, but I figured I'd post some pictures of how it's coming along...

all of the mess around the canvas is the paper that I put on top of my drawing table, to prevent it from getting paint all over it.

I've also been doing some jewelry work, in preparation for a project that I'll be doing in a few weeks. I'll be working with a local artist out at the Cedar Creek Gallery--she makes beautiful pieces! You can find her work on her website: Sandra McEwen. This is a necklace that I'm working on right now; once again, it's not finished yet. I made the flower in the center using polymer clay and acrylic paint, and then sealed it.

I've been trying my hand at different wire-wrapping techniques; I plan on using even more for the rest of the necklace.

Springtime.

Yes, that infectious time of year when flowers bloom, sleeves become shorter, and pollen infests the air. I think my favorite thing to do right now is go to the park along with my trusty sketchbook and guitar, and spend an afternoon existing in complete equilibrium with the world. By day, I've got spring fever and am generally happy. By night, things can be iffy, but I always make it through. Spring is a time of change, which has always been something that I struggle with. As E.E. Cummings said, "roses complain their beauties are in vain, but though mankind persuades itself that every weed's a rose, roses will only smile." Maybe Spring is just an illusion. Or perhaps I'm changing; maybe I'm beginning to see things through a new lens...

some photography...

been experimenting with photography lately, as well as lomography (i'd post lomo pics but i still need to get them developed...). in lieu of that, i've got some other photos i've taken.

the park where i live--taken several months ago.

i'm starting to realize just how luck i am to have grown up near a park. after a rough day and one too many cups of coffee, it's the perfect place to wind down.

for once, i wasn't wearing make-up. =/

me several hair colors ago, messing around with my kodak duoflex and naively thinking that ttv could work without a shadowbox. i was wrong.

from my trip to the georgia aquarium. this is a wolf eel--my brother thinks it looks like an old man. i think he's just lonely :'(

knowing me, there will be more photos in the not so distant future. also, i bought the hinges for my triptych today--hopefully it'll be done by tomorrow.

and now for something completely different: for anyone who hasn't seen this, it's amazing...

triptych...

i've been working on a triptych for a little while now, and i'm just about done with it! really the only thing left for me to do is attach the hinges and possibly some molding, and then it'll be done. i'll post some pics after i'm sure it's completed.

in other news, yesterday i found my wood-burner/soldering iron/hot knife, which means that i might be dabbling in sculpture at some point. also, i believe on april 4th a piece of mine will be going on display--it's the largest piece i've ever done, measuring about 3'x7.5'. the dimensions make it really difficult to photograph, but i've taken a really rough picture of it (i had to hang it up outside in the sunlight and stand back about 15 feet in order to get the whole image in the frame...)

i'm not sure how much wall space there is for the show, but if they'll fit i might also be displaying some other pieces from earlier in the year, including:

despite the complete creepiness of the last piece, it was actually really fun to work on. i used some sort of unconventional methods for laying down the background (i had planned on using a spray bottle to help the paint spread, but then i forgot it. i then resorted to buying a bottle of watter and spitting it out onto the wet paint...). i think the act of actually spitting on my own piece is certainly reflective of its subject matter, as well as my disgust with how some people seem to lack any sort of religious tolerance /*rant*

but yes. anyways, i will post triptych photos once it's completed.

Intro: First Post

Hello all,

Just a bit of an intro--the main purpose of this blog is to have an organized place for me to share my artwork on the internet. I have attempted to set up portfolio blogs and websites in the past, however the .html and .xhtml needed were too frustrating and too time-intensive for me to learn to code on my own. This blog will hopefully be the solution to my lack of interweb savvy (however, if anyone knows of a good .html tutorial, I wouldn't mind taking a look at it!).

Anyways--a bit about myself: I've been addicted to art all my life. Self-expression is my own personal oxygen; I can't function without it. Through my artwork, I have trained myself to see the world from a different, more symbolic and emotional perspective. People always tell me, "you're defined by who you are, not what you do." But what if those two things are synonymous? I have a tendency to define myself through my work because it reveals the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that have formed the person I am today.
I don't just draw and paint, though. I play guitar, sew, write the occasional short story or poem, sculpt....the list goes on. I believe in the importance and beauty of spontaneity, and how one's impulses can provide insight to how we define ourselves as human beings. Through my art (as well as the work of others), I mull over life's big questions in search of my own personal identity...

...and now I have to go clean my hamster's cage. That's it for now!
